Neighbours star criticises bizarre way the show disposed of iconic props

Neighbours star Jordy Lucas has criticised the way the show disposed of its iconic props, ahead of its final episode this December. The long-running Aussie soap was axed for the second time earlier this year and has since been giving away a range of set memorabilia.

The giveaways included an Instagram competition titled ‘Your Piece of the Street’, which allowed die-hard UK and Australian fans to nab some beloved prop items from across Erinsborough.

The exclusive prize bundles, which included name badges, paintings, letters and costumes, had to be picked up in person from Melbourne or collected for overseas postage.

However, according to Yahoo Lifestyle, other prop items weren’t given such a ceremonious farewell, and were instead donated to local charity shops close to where Neighbours filming took place.

Though the items will reportedly be sold by the charity shops online to reach global Neighbours fans, Lucas, who played Summer Hoyland on the soap, described the move as a “missed opportunity”.summer hoyland in neighbours

“I’m certainly not bashing op shops and I love that the props and wardrobe will get a second life, [but] I do think this was a missed opportunity to give back to long-time fans of the show,” she explained.

“Neighbours fans are the most loyal, enthusiastic group, and it’s because of them that the show lasted as long as it did. They banded together in a big way to get the show revived in 2022/2023.jordy lucas

“If more time and thought had been put into this, many of them could have had a piece of the show to keep forever.”

The star suggested alternative ways for the soap to offload its props, including auctioning for charity, more fan giveaways, donations to drama schools and allowing former cast members to choose their own keepsakes.

“Neighbours was special because it had heart. This was one last chance to give back to everyone that made up the family — cast, crew, and fans,” she concluded.
